Khonoma Green Village, Nagaland, India: From Warriors to Wardens

Nestled in the remote hills of Northeast India, the state of Nagaland remains largely outside the typical tourist circuit. Khonoma is a fascinating case study in tribal self-governance and environmental rebirth.

The "Cool" Factor: The village is famous for being Asia’s first Green Village.

The Sustainability Model: Up until the late 1990s, the Angami tribe of Khonoma were legendary hunters. But in a pivotal moment of community action, the village council declared a 20 km² area a Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary (KNCTS), effectively banning all hunting and commercial logging to save the endangered Blyth's Tragopan pheasant. Today, the economy runs on homestays and ecotourism centered on showcasing their conservation success and unique Angami culture, including ancient terraced farming. The income supports the local community and reinforces the ban, proving that local self-regulation can often be more effective than government laws.
