Pepperfry did not start out as a furniture company. It launched as a broad online marketplace covering fashion and lifestyle. After initial results fell short, the founders made a bold call to pivot and focus entirely on furniture and home decor, a decision that proved to be the turning point.

The two founders of Pepperfry met while working at the same global e-commerce company in India. They came up with the idea for the business during a casual lunch meeting at a mutual friend's office. The early business plan was reportedly sketched out on a tissue paper.

Pepperfry has its corporate base in India's financial capital, the same city where its founders met and decided to launch the business. The company also built its primary logistics infrastructure from this city, eventually expanding its delivery network to reach customers in over 300 cities across India.

Pepperfry's Series F round in 2020 was notable because it was led by a company that is not typically associated with e-commerce investment. The lead investor is a well-known Indian industrial brand, and its backing was seen as a strong vote of confidence in Pepperfry's long-term direction.

After facing repeated issues with third-party delivery partners, where roughly one in five furniture deliveries arrived damaged, Pepperfry decided to build its own logistics arm. The company purchased its first ten trucks in mid-2013 and grew the fleet to over 360 vehicles serving customers across the country.
