Lactalis Quiz: You Know the Products, Not the Brand

Lactalis may be one of the largest dairy groups in the world, but its roots lie in a small French town far from the glamour of Paris or Lyon. The company was founded there by the Besnier family and has continued to operate its global headquarters from the same location, maintaining a low-profile identity despite its massive scale.

Lactalis owns one of France's most recognisable cheese brands, closely linked to soft-ripened French cheeses. This brand has a strong retail presence across Europe and North America and is often positioned as a premium offering. It carries strong ties to French dairy heritage and is one of Lactalis's most prominent consumer labels.

Lactalis entered India through a strategic acquisition rather than building from scratch. It acquired a controlling stake in a South India-based dairy company with an established procurement network, processing capacity and regional brand presence, giving Lactalis an immediate operational base to grow in the Indian dairy market.

Unlike most companies of its size, Lactalis has never gone public. It remains firmly in the hands of the family that founded it in France decades ago. This private ownership structure has allowed the group to pursue acquisitions and long-term strategies without the quarterly reporting pressures that publicly listed companies typically face from investors.

Stonyfield was one of the United States' best-known organic yoghurt brands before it changed hands. Lactalis had owned it as part of its North American portfolio but chose to divest the brand in 2017. The buyer was a large multinational food and beverage company already active in the dairy and nutrition space globally.
