The New York Times was not always known by its current name. When it first appeared on newsstands in the 19th century, it carried a longer title. Its launch year marked an important chapter in American journalism, eventually making it one of the world's most recognised newspapers.

By the late 1890s, The New York Times was in serious financial trouble and losing relevance fast. A newspaper publisher stepped in, acquired it, and completely turned its fortunes around. Under new ownership, it gained credibility and went on to become a globally respected publication.

When Adolph Ochs took over The New York Times in 1896, he introduced a short but powerful editorial motto that defined the newspaper's philosophy and values. That phrase has appeared on the masthead ever since and remains one of the most recognised slogans in global journalism today.

Henry Jarvis Raymond did not start The New York Daily Times on his own in 1851. He had a co-founder who shared his vision of creating a serious, reliable newspaper for New York readers. Together they launched what would eventually become one of the most influential papers in history.

Before making his mark in New York, Adolph Ochs cut his teeth running a financially troubled newspaper in Tennessee. His success in reviving that publication gave him the confidence and credibility to pursue and eventually acquire The New York Times when it was struggling in 1896.
