The Sports Connection: From Sailors to Superstars

Why did athletes start "stealing" clothes from sailors?

Because early sports were rough! In the 1800s, if you played football or rugby in a normal cotton shirt, it would tear to shreds in minutes. Athletes realised that "Jersey" fabric moved with their bodies instead of against them. By the 1890s, almost every team wanted a "jersey."

Was the first cricket jersey itchy?

Yes! For a long time, jerseys were made of 100% heavy wool. Imagine playing a 5-day Test match in the hot sun wearing a thick winter sweater—that was the reality for early cricketers until we invented the light, "breezy" fabrics we use today.
