The Big Question: What’s in a Name?
Is "Jersey" a brand name or a person?
Actually, it’s a place! Most people think of New Jersey in the USA, but the name actually comes from a tiny, windy island called Jersey in the English Channel (between England and France).
How did a tiny island start a global fashion trend?
Back in the 1600s, the people on this island were master knitters. They created a special kind of wool sweater that was famous for being stretchy. Before this, most clothes were stiff and easy to rip. Sailors and fishermen loved these "Jersey sweaters" because they could pull heavy nets out of the sea without their sleeves snapping. On that island, the jersey was born out of survival.
