JSPL traces its origins to a company incorporated in the late 1970s as part of the broader O.P. Jindal Group. Over the decades, it grew from a basic steel manufacturer into an integrated producer of steel, power and related products. Today, the company operates major plants across Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Jharkhand.

JSPL is led by the youngest son of industrialist O.P. Jindal, who transformed the company from a modest operation into a globally recognised steel producer. He is also known for fighting a landmark Supreme Court case in 2004 that changed how Indian citizens can display the national flag. He represents Kurukshetra in Parliament.

JSPL set up one of its most significant integrated steel plants in a district in Odisha that is well known for its coal and mineral resources. This facility is home to the world's first coal-gasification-based direct reduced iron plant. The district also hosts a major pellet plant that supports iron ore processing.

JSPL holds the distinction of being the only private company in India to manufacture railway rails. The company produces rails of a record-breaking length at its plant in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. These extra-long rails reduce the number of joints in a track, which improves ride quality and lowers maintenance costs for railways.

In early 2025, JSPL announced a major investment commitment to the Government of Odisha as part of a planned expansion of its Angul facility. The expansion aims to double the plant's steelmaking capacity. Once complete, Angul is expected to become one of the largest single-location steel plants in the country.
